zzzzz’s Healthy Ingredient of the Month: Goji Berries

Goji Berries are one of the exotic superfoods found in a protein shake called Shakeology. They are also called the wolfberry and are native to China. In Asia, goji berries have been eaten for generations in the hope of living longer. You may have never heard of the goji berry and might be wondering what makes this exotic fruit good for you.

Here are the stats: Goji berries are high in Vitamin C and fiber, and low in calories.  They are also a good source of iron and Vitamin A. Goji berries also have the highest concentration of protein of any fruit. A four ounce serving provides nearly 10% of the suggested amount of dietary protein. Please note that there can be adverse interactions if you consume goji berries while also taking medication for diabetes, or blood pressure, or take the blood thinner Warfarin. So be sure to consult your health care provider if that is the case.

Contact Stacy Fehlinger at longevitycoachstacy@gmail.com for additional information on goji berries or if you want to know how you can purchase Shakeology which contains this ingredient and several other exotic superfoods!

Suggestions for Eating Healthy & Exercising While Traveling This Summer

Suggestions for Eating Healthy & Exercising While Traveling This Summer

It’s almost summer break for the school age kids and many people will be traveling on their summer vacations. If you are trying to lose weight and/or trying to eat healthy, your vacation doesn’t have to wreck your health & wellness goals. Of course, you’ll splurge a bit on vacation, but I can offer a few tips to keep you on track while vacationing:

  1. As you researched your vacation destination, also research the restaurants near where you are staying.  The majority of restaurants even those that aren’t major chain restaurants have a website where you can check out their menus for healthier fare.
  2. Search for local farmers markets to purchase fresh produce to take on a picnic or to have on hand where you are staying.
  3. Many restaurants serve meals that are actually two or three times an actual portion size. You can split the meal with your partner or child or ask for a to-go container and box up ½ of the meal when it arrives to eat the following day.  This will help you save money too.
  4. When ordering dessert, share it with your partner or child and save ½ the amount of fat and calories and you won’t feel deprived as skipping it altogether.

Just because you’re on vacation doesn’t necessarily mean that you should stop your current exercise routine.  For example, if you have been losing weight and exercising 5 times a week, you can continue your exercise routine on vacation.  Depending on where your vacationing, the possibilities for exercise are endless!

  1. If you’re at a beach destination, take a 30- minute brisk walk or run on the beach. If staying in a mountainous region, go on a 30-minute hike on a trail.
  2. Many vacation destinations offer bike rentals as a way to explore the city.  Rent a bike for a day or a few hours and burn off those extra vacation calories.
  3. If you prefer to exercise indoors instead of outside, bring along some lightweight easy to pack resistance bands and stretch bands. Then find an on-line quick workout or make up one of your own and exercise in the privacy of your hotel room.  Many exercises do not require much room.

Wherever your summer adventures take you, I hope you have fun and won’t be too upset when you hit the scale for the 1st time after returning home.

In good health & safe travels,
Stacy

Take Time for Yourself and Relax!

Ahh, it’s finally summer and many of us are getting some needed rest and relaxation by taking a vacation. I recently took a beach vacation and it gave me the idea to write this blog about relaxation and how important it is to de-stress.  I can honestly say that I felt more relaxed after this particular vacation than I had in a very long time.

However, it is really important to your overall health to keep stress at bay year round and not just on your annual vacation. It’s important to take time for yourself daily to help you relax and keep your stress level under control.

Did you know that chronic stress can age every body part?  If your body is exposed to constant high levels of cortisol, it can cause any of the conditions mentioned below:

  • Premature aging
  • Decreased insulin sensitivity, causing diabetes
  • Growth of cancer cells
  • Decreased growth hormone
  • Increased appetite
  • Increased fat storage, especially abdominal fat
  • Increased heartburn
  • Weakened muscles
  • Slow wound healing
  • Poor quality sleep
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Destruction of brain cells, especially memory function

There are some very healthy ways to combat your stress level and keep your cortisol levels at a healthy level. Here are six simple techniques to help you combat stress:

  1. Practice stress busters. For example, redirect negative thoughts and surround yourself with upbeat, positive people.
  2. Cut down on caffeine. Caffeine raises stress hormone levels.
  3. Reduce unnecessary noise. Traffic sounds, train horns, and even loud music can increase cortisol levels.
  4. Get enough rest. Our cortisol levels typically fall to their lowest level around 6:00 p.m. which prepares the body for a relaxed state to fall to sleep. High levels of stress in the afternoon and evening can interfere with sleep. This causes us to spend less time in deep sleep which in turn makes us produce less growth hormone throwing the body out of endocrine balance. Try to relax in the late afternoon and evening to ensure a good night’s sleep.
  5. Enjoy a natural morning high. Cortisol is naturally high in the morning around 6:00 a.m. which helps us start each day with a burst of energy. This is a great time to exercise and burn some of that energy.
  6. Stay lean. The more fat cells you have the more cortisol they produce.  Excess stress produces fat, especially abdominal fat.

If you are wondering what I do to control my stress level, because let’s face it we all experience some level of stress, I take time for myself everyday.  Most days of the week my “me time” includes exercising. Listening to music has always been able to reduce  my stress level. I also like a bit of pampering, so  my monthly facial and pedicures I treat myself to from time to time are very relaxing.

One area of relaxation I have been trying to incorporate this year is meditation.  As a health coach, I am always reading articles related to health & wellness and over the past few years there has been much talk about the benefits of meditation. At the beginning of the year, I set a goal to incorporate mediation into every week and work up to a few minutes everyday. This is still a work in progress for me, but I can tell you that I do feel more relaxed on the days that I have taken the time to meditate for a few minutes.

I hope all of you find some relaxation this summer and find healthy ways to control your stress that work for you throughout the year.

In good health,
Stacy

zzzzz’s Healthy Ingredient of the Month:
Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha is an adaptogenic herb popular in Ayuvedic healing. The herb is grown in mild climates and is native to India, northern Africa, and the Middle East. It is also grown in the United States. An adaptogen is a combination of amino acids, vitamins and herbs.  They help the body cope with external stresses such as toxins in the environment and internal stresses such as anxiety, depression and insomnia.

Ashwagandha belongs to the same family as the tomato. It is a plump shrub with oval leaves and yellow flowers and bears red fruit about the size of a raisin. Ashwagandha can help relieve symptoms of stress, fatigue, lack of energy and difficulty concentrating. In India, Ashwagandha is used to strengthen the immune system after illness. In over 200 studies, Ashwagandha has shown incredible results in lowering cortisol and balancing thyroid hormones. What product can you find this fantastic herb?  Shakeology contains Ashwagandha as one of its healthy adaptogens.

The Health Benefits of Water

With the heat of the summer it is more important than ever to make sure you are staying hydrated and drinking enough water.  It’s also important that your reaching for water instead of carbonated beverages and sports drinks. The other beverages contain lots of sugar or artificial sweeteners which are always good to avoid. Jazz up your water by infusing it with fruits and herbs to add flavor without calories or sugar.  Check out the infused water recipe below.

zzzzz’s Healthy Ingredient of the Month:
Goji Berries

In good health & safe travels,
Stacy

The Dilemma:
Getting Kids to Eat a Healthy Breakfast Before School

We are a family of night owls. Our kids would stay up half the night even on a school night if we would let them.  To be honest, it’s hard for me to wake up in the mornings too.  However, there are benefits of eating a healthy breakfast before school.

What defines a healthy breakfast?  A healthy breakfast contains protein, complex carbohydrates, fiber, calcium and healthy fats.  Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the box of cereal with the first ingredient listed as sugar, a doughnut, or toaster pastry doesn’t qualify as a healthy breakfast and will only fuel up the kids for a short while before a major sugar crash.

Although this is not an all-inclusive list, there are three key benefits to a healthy “brainy” breakfast:

Benefit #1:
Breakfast primes the brain for learning. Research has shown that children who eat breakfast earn higher grades in school, are more attentive, improve their reading scores, have less emotional and behavioral problems, and show improved memory on complex tasks.

Benefit #2:
Children who eat breakfast tend to eat healthier throughout the day. Research has shown that children who miss breakfast get overly hungry and can overeat at lunch time.  Also, if a child eats a high sugar breakfast, he or she tends to overeat junk food the rest of the day. Their bodies crave the fast sugar high which again leads to the sugar crash mentioned earlier.

Benefit #3:
Children, like adults, tend to be leaner when they eat breakfast. Breakfast kick starts the child’s metabolism, the process by which the body converts the fuel in food to energy. This causes the body to start burning calories and also gives the child energy to get through the morning at school.

I hope all of you have chaos-free mornings with your children and can get them out the door with a nutritious breakfast.  And if it’s one of those days where the kids are moving slow and are about to miss the bus or are not hungry when they wake up, there is always the alternative to eat breakfast at school.

In good health,
Stacy

No Time to Workout or Working Out Is Too Expensive?

I cannot tell you how many times I have heard from people that either (1) they do not have enough time to workout or (2) it’s too expensive to workout. Does this sound familiar to you too? Wait YOU don’t think this way do you?

Well, if you think it’s too expensive or that you do not have enough time to workout then I have a question for you. Have you ever considered that sickness is actually more expensive than wellness? Let me explain: First, we are all well aware of the rising healthcare costs in this country. Developing chronic illnesses such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and even the dreaded “C” word cancer is VERY expensive to treat once diagnosed.

Sure, if you join a gym, hire a personal trainer, or pay for Zumba or CrossFit classes you will pay weekly or monthly fees. But, if you are consistent with exercising the payoff is that you are much less likely to develop a chronic illness than if you’re a couch potato. I’m also betting that your gym fees will be far less expensive than your healthcare costs for treating a major illness.

Okay, so I haven’t convinced you yet to run out and buy a gym membership or hire a personal trainer. There are still several other workout alternatives. When shopping at any major retailer, you’ll notice there are several workout DVD’s. Also, there are on-line programs and on-line DVD programs you can purchase that are less expensive than a gym membership. Another added benefit is you can workout in the privacy of your own home!

I realize I’ve yet to address the issue of having enough time to workout. I really challenge anyone reading this to tell me that they cannot carve out just 30 minutes most days of the week to fit in some type of exercise. Believe me I know how busy we all are 24/7, but fitting in a workout most days of the week for as little as 30 minutes a day is very beneficial for your overall health & wellness.

Another time factor to consider is that you can exercise in smaller increments throughout the day. If you have a dog and walk your dog for 15 minutes, three times a day, you have actually exercised a total of 45 minutes that day.

I will close with this thought. If there is something you like doing whether it’s playing tennis or any other sport, walking, running, swimming or dancing just do what you like and get out there and play – yes I just switched the word from exercise to “play”. Now, doesn’t that sound like something you want to fit in your daily schedule now?

    In good health,

    Stacy
